🔹先日「写真で見れる鎧甲冑」始めて着て、馬乗りました。勿論木曽馬です😆伝統馬具を使いました。
The other day I rode in this armour for the first time. I rode a Japanese indigenous horse 「Kiso Uma」with a traditional saddle, stirrups and horse tack.
🔹鎧甲冑というと鉄でできておりますがそこまで重たくないです(20㌔前後) 着ないで乗る、着てる状態で乗るとやはり大きいな違い色々ありました、
The armour wasn't too heavy (about 20 plus kilos) but riding in armour was very different and interesting as you'd expect
🔹体の重心が変わり、乗りながら研究して、バランスを探してました。鞍、鐙、手綱の使い方が少し変わり、研究中の立ち透かしをいかしてみたりして、上下の動きはどう変わるのか？と試してみました。
My centre of gravity changed slightly so I adjusted my posture accordingly. I had to use my legs like suspension leaving a small space between the saddle and myself when trotting so the up and down movements wouldn't be too dramatic. With every movement the armour would make a lot of sounds!
🔹鎧甲冑から馬の負担を減らすため、坂おりる時や坂のぼる時はしっかりと後ろや前に体/姿勢を動かしてみまでぃた。
When going downhill and uphill I just needed to make sure I was leaning back or forward enough to take the strain off the horse due to the added weight of the armour.
🔹初めて草鞋はいて馬乗りました。滑るっという不安ありましたが、バッチリでした。はきやすかったし、滑りもせずとってもよかったです。I wore waraji, traditional straw rope sandals. I thought that my feet would slip in the steel stirrups (abumi) but were amazingly comfortable and easy to wear.
🔹馬上の鎧甲冑乗りはとっても勉強になりました！研究できる機会が中なかなくて、今回沢山乗れて嬉しかった✨
Riding in armour was quite an eye opening experience and just being about to research, test and experiment riding in armour was a very special opportunity for me. Hopefully I will be trying again soon!
🔹木曽馬x鎧甲冑
体つきが立派な木曽うまですが、伝統馬具やぴったり合うし、こちらの馬場では色んな方が鎧を着て馬乗り乗りますので、馬はなれてるようです。
The horses are used to people riding them and training in armour. Their legs are sturdy and their midsection and back is a perfect fit for traditional Japanese horse tack.

竹弓の話し、竹は大切
Talking about the bamboo bow, take yumi 「竹弓」
🔹I got the very special chance to be involved in the selection and cutting of bamboo for bows (yumi) for Koyama Kyudo Shop @koyamakyugu Just being able to help was a massive honour. It was an experience I will never forget! I have a new found appreciation for take and take bows and arrows.

大変貴重な体験でした。そもそも竹弓になるまでの流れが秘密が多く、実際そのプロセスに手伝いできるなんて光栄ですね。竹弓、竹矢の見た目が変わりました。今後もっと勉強して竹弓、竹矢もっと大切していきたいなと思います✨
Traditional techniques are fairly shrouded in secrecy, however I'm allowed to show you into the 竹take selection process!
🔹昔から竹が日本の方の日常生活に沢山使われてます。履き物やら、服、武器から流鏑馬射手の騎射笠なども。
Traditionally, bamboo has been used for many things in Japan from footwear to clothing, weapons to the kisshagasa that yabusame archers wear on their heads.
🔹弓を引く私にとって竹と言えば、弓と矢ですね。昔から竹しかなかったが昭和行以降グラスやカーボン弓がで始め少しずつ弓の業界が変わっていきました。
Being a kyudo practitioner, bamboo for me means yumi and ya. Historically yumi were all take, around the Showa period the invention of fibreglass then carbon yumis changed the bow crafting industry and the way people viewed takeyumi.
🔹さって、竹林に入り、竹をはかるための赤い簿を頂きました、そちらに理想の節の間隔の目印がついてて、竹に合わせると理想がどうか目で判断できます☺️
We entered the chikurin bamboo forest and were given a guide (red ruler) to show the best length and node spacing.
🔹弓に理想な竹と言えば
色合、節と節の間隔、竹幅、全体形、節の出っ張り具合/色合等
So what's important in selection?
Node spacing, node flatness and colouring, bamboo thickness, straightness, colouring (as it relates to age) amongst other things.
🔹何本か見つけたけど本当に難しかった！当日 日置流伊達印西流の黒須先生と、小山弓具の小山社長と一緒で沢山勉強させていただきました！
I found several but it took a longtime with such a stringent checklist. I cut the take together with Kurosu sensei who is introduced over at @humansofmartialarts and Mr Koyama the owner of Koyama Kyudo shop.
🔹持って帰る竹は最高質な物のみ、工房で数ヵ月から数年乾燥させてからいよいよ弓の製作が始まる、
After the bamboo is cut it is then cut lengthwise again and transported to the workshop where it spends several months/years before the bow making process even begins!
一生忘れない体験でした✨
This was an experience I'll never forget.

Taking about Naginata and Hitatare
｢直垂｣着てます! 上と下に別れており、上は直垂、下が袴になってて、直垂袴と呼ばれてます。
Hitatare is the garment I'm wearing in the photos.
It's in two pieces, the top part is ｢hitatare｣ and the bottom part is ｢hitatare hakama｣

🔹全日本なぎなたを習い始めました!!
薙刀（なぎなた）は、日本の長柄武器の一種で、平安時代に登場した武具である。
私はまだ形を覚えるところですが、とっても面白いです。写真で手に持ってる薙刀が馬上武芸のトレーニング用の物です。目標として、馬上薙刀は出きるようになりたいです。
A couple of months back I started to learn Zen Nihon naginata!
The naginata (なぎなた, 薙刀) is a pole weapon and one of several varieties of traditionally made Japanese blades (nihontō). They gained popularity around the Heian Period.
For practice I use a wood and bamboo naginata, and the photos here show a wooden naginata for bajobugei training or martial arts on horseback. I'm still learning kata at the moment but I will update everyone on my progress soon! Eventually I would like to use naginata on horseback too.

🔹平安時代から存在する物であって、後で武士の服として使われました。
The hitatare originated in the early Heian period becoming common samurai clothing later in the same period. By the mid 13th century, hitatare had become the standard samurai garment.
🔹現代ではまだ色んな場面で直垂見れます。能、流鏑馬、射礼など
私はスポーツ流鏑馬や和式馬術の稽古、検定、大会などで着ます。
You can see hitatare these days in noh performances, during yabusame ceremonies and kyudo related ceremonies. I will wear hitatare for my sports yabusame gradings and competitions as hitatare is popular among sports yabusame archers too.

🔹気合の話
Let's get down to business or「Talking about Kiai」
🔹気合という言葉は皆さん聞いたことありますか？
Have you ever hear of the word kiai?
🔹How do you prepare yourself mentally before something big?
🔹I think kiai 気合 is the process of focussing your mental energy. In martial arts everywhere it plays a big factor in concentration and focus in daily practice and gradings etc. Kiai can also spill over into our daily lives and work too. I think it's that time when we tell ourselves let's do this! and put our minds to something.
🔹私は最近よく考えてます。弓を引く時ってやはりその時の謝で気持ち表す、気持ちは表現できます。疲れてるとき、落ち着いてないとき、謝みてわかります。
Lately it's something I've been thinking about a lot. When we practice kyudo our feelings and state of mind at that moment tend to be shown unconsciously by our movements. If I am tired or nervous for example it shows in my shooting.
🔹個人的に強い矢飛ばしたい、落ち着いた、力強い謝目指して稽古してます。I'm working towards a calm but strong technique.
🔹道場行く前から気合入れてます。着替えるとき袴はく瞬間スウィッチが入る(笑)道場まで移動中はイメージトレイニング行う、黙想決める、道具準備してるっとき、巻藁引く時、少しずつ、少しずつ、気合入ります。
For me kiai starts before I enter the dojo. Due to corona I dress at home. The simple act of changing into hakama switches mind over. As I drive to the dojo I think about what I want to work on, what worked well last practice. Setting up my equipment, shooting the makiwara as a warmup, every step little by little my mind is switching on? preparing for that first shot.

I realised its been a while since I posted about my friends the Kiso Uma
🔹ご存じない方居るかもしれないので改めて、一年半前から和式馬術、スポーツ流鏑馬、最近馬上武芸学んでます。和種馬、和式馬具、和式の馬術がとっても好きです。
For those who don't know, I've been learning washiki bajutsu (Japanese traditional equestrianism) for about a year and a half. The equipment, horses and techniques are all very different and amazingly interesting💡
🔹木曽馬は丈夫で働きもので、温和で従順な性格を持つ。
We ride on Japanese indigenous horses called Kiso uma. The traditional horse tack is made for their bodies. They are well known for their hard working no nonsense attitude, their good memory and even temperament. And they snuggly and so sweet too💙
🔹本州の在来種は木曽馬のみである。短足胴長であり、体幅が広いところが特徴的。平安時代から江戸時代にかけて、武士の馬として使用された。
Kiso uma is one of the eight indigenous horse breeds of Japan. It is the only native horse breed from Honshu. Like most other Japanese native breeds, it is critically endangered.
🔹一時絶滅寸前であったが木曽馬保存会が中心に活動が行なわれた結果、飼育数は増加した。しかし以前のような乗用、農耕を目的とした需要はなく、現在は200頭以下だそう。
The Kiso is a small horse, but mid-sized in relation to other Japanese native breeds. I love its long hair and stocky build.
The Kiso breed originates from the Kiso Valley and Kiso Sanmyaku mountain range in Nagano, and Higashimino region, Gifu, Honshu.
During the Meiji era the breed was severely affected by breeding programmes of the Imperial Army, which wanted taller horses and ordered that Kiso stallions be gelded.
🔹山梨の紅葉台木曽馬牧場では木曽系乗用馬の保存、育成を目的に設立された。和種馬（木曽馬や北海道和種などの日本在来馬）の活用の1つとして和式馬術の探求を行っています。
Thanks to specialised breeding programs and horse ranches like this one, little by little the population is growing once again.

🔹先日「キャッスル·ティンタジェル」という東京のある道場とスーパーリング施設訪れました。ティンタジェルでは騎士道も武士道の勉強、古武術と伝統武器術の勉強ができます。
The other day I visited a dojo and sparring facility called Castle Tintagel. Here you can learn both kishido or bushido, so European or Japanese medieval martial arts.
🔹袴が裁付袴（たっつけはかま）はいてます。鎧身に付ける時に使う袴です。翌日鎧してスーパーリングをしてました✨
Side note: I'm wearing a tattsuke bakama/yoroi hakama for keiko in the photos as the next day I fight in armor. The yoroi hakama goes slim and ties down under the knee so armor can be attached and for ease of movement.
🔹ジェイ・ノイズさんがキャッスル・ティンタジェルの城主。特技: ドイツ剣術（14世紀型のロングソード)。2012年にアメリカで開催されたHEMAアライアンス（中世西洋剣術大会）にて優勝。2013年ジャパン・アーマードバトル・リーグを結成。Part 2でもと話します。
ノイズさんが騎士道 の先生です。
騎士道コースはロングソード、ウェポンとシールド(盾)、ポールアーム(長柄・棹状武器)、ダガー（短剣）などの勉強ができます。
The boss is Jay Noyes and he is a passionate and wonderful guy who I will talk about more in Part 2. With Jay san you can study Knightly Combat, both armored and unarmored. Using 15th Century longswords, spears, halberds, weapons and shields, daggers, and grappling.
🔹今回は日本式の 武士道 稽古してきました。先生が 田中 克実さん。剣道歴史35年、無外流清川派15年、天道流薙刀術やジャパン・アーマード・バトルリーグ選手として活躍してます。
This time however I tried the Bushido class. They cover samurai combat, armored and unarmored. Katana, yari, naginata, tanto, and grappling. The sensei for the class is Tanaka san. He has over 35 years experience in kendo, and 15 years practicing Mugai Ryu and Tendo Ryu naginatajutsu.
🔹礼法、刀のパーツの名前、持ち方、姿勢、刃の向き、刀の抜け方、形、歩き方等、たくさん教えてくれました。はじめてのレッスンは木刀を使用してました。
He taught me about the different types of swords and the names of the parts, the way the blade should face and how to hold the katana. I used a wooden sword or bokken/bokuto as this was my first lesson. He also taught me how to walk and several kata.
Big respect to sword practitioners everywhere! It required a lot of concentration😅
🔹集中的に知識ゼロのところからたくさん教えてくれました。田中さんの明るい性格とユニークな教え方がとってもよかった✨今日のレッスンがその翌日で行う侍バトルのための準備でした✨パート２お楽しみにに!!
