After hinawaju okeiko everyone went to Sugiyama Castle (杉山城, Sugiyama-jō). Sugiyama-jo was a Sengoku period castle located in what is now Ranzan in Saitama.
火縄銃お稽古の後、嵐山にある杉山城跡行きました。午後から団体とイベントがありました。
The group held an event in association with the Castle ruins preservation society to draw interest and awareness to the area.The site and its ruins are now protected as a National Historic Site.The date of construction is estimated at late 15th century to early 16th century however its is now ruins.
地元の杉山城跡保存会の皆さんで杉山城跡まで歩いて、撮影がありました。
杉山城は戦国時代の山城で、約14万平方メートルという狭い範囲の中で、高低差を利用しながらおよそ10の郭を配置した縄張りです。
こうした高度な築城技術が高く評価され、「築城の教科書」「戦国期城郭の最高傑作のひとつ」といわれています。
Walking up in a procession was so awesome. Everyone had their sashimono, their hinawaju and their armor. 法螺貝なりながら、皆さんと歩いてて、最高に良かったです。皆さんフル鎧と、火縄銃持って歩いてました✨
The troughs and dead ends built into the ground along the way were amazing. They were to confuse attackers and to permit defenders to fire back from many angles from above in the castle.
平成20年には比企城館跡群として国指定史跡に指定され、研究者やお城好き、歴史ファンの方々が県外からも訪れる隠れた観光スポットとなっています。
Along the way there was a member responsible for sounding the horagai called a kaiyaku🦪
法螺貝の担当が貝役と言いまして、大昔法螺貝に良くなれてる山伏ががその貝役でした🦪
In war, the shell was called jinkai, was one of several signal devices used by samurai. It was used to signal troops to attack, withdraw, or change strategies, in the same way a bugle or flugelhorn was used in other countries.
戦国時代には合戦における戦陣の合図や戦意高揚のために、陣貝と呼ばれる法螺貝が用いられた。

To get a feel of a kyudo archers ability have a look at their angles and lines, even when they are moving.
射手の弓と矢の角度を注目下さい。動きながらでも見てみて下さい。
When walking our bows must be 10cm off the floor. 歩く時は弓が床の10cm上の高さを保つ、体の中心に来る。
The flat line of the arrow or slighty tip lowered we call mizuno nagare, flow of the water.
矢は真っ直ぐか先が少しした向き(水の流れ)
The bow straight up and down (not tilted)even when going from sitting to standing.
座った姿勢から、立った姿勢、足踏み、弓引く時も弓が大体上下真っ直ぐ。
The lines are really calming for me visually. Training your body to produce these lines takes alot of practice.個人的にこの真っ直ぐ、斜めのラインが落ち着く。見てお櫃く、やって落ち着く。自然体でバランスよく弓矢を使うのは長年の稽古が必要。
During our kata or hassetsu flat lines and straight up and down lines can be found on 5 places on our body if our form is correct. This is called 「Go ju ju monji 」五重十文字 I will talk about it another day😃

I can't wait for spring! I'm trying my hardest to bring a feeling of spring feeling with my light green kimono. The camellia/tsubaki flower detail is so beautiful.
春は待ちきれない😃春に色んな企画があります。春らしい気分になるよう、緑着物着てます。袖の椿がとても好き。

「Do you always go to different dojo's in Japan? Or is it like you have a membership and can go everywhere? 」

So over here the standard and most widely practiced school of archery is called Zen Nihon Kyudo Renmei. They started about 70 years ago.
日本では多分一番人口多い弓道は約70年前に始まった「全日本弓道連盟」です。
I think including koryu dojos there are over 1200 Japan wide. Most of which are Zen Nihon dojos.
There is a membership system, and if you have the minimum grade required (each dojo has different rules, some depend on the gymnasium groups rules too)
then you can in theory visit dojos all around the country this is called kojin riyou, personal use.
流派含め全国に1200ヶ所以上の道場あります。多くの道場は全弓連だそうです。会員になると、段位と施設によりますが全国で弓引けるはずです。ホーム道場外の道場利用は、貸し切りまたは個人利用といいます。
🔹Do you always go to different dojos?
Simply put I'm usually at my home dojo. But if time permits I go to other dojos within Saitama and Tokyo depending on the circumstance. 私は会員になってるホーム道場がメインになります。少し東京、と埼玉の道場ネットワークがあります。撮影で弓道が必要な場合◯◯道場は優先的使用します。
If I have an interview or need to shoot something kyudo related then I visit a specific dojo as the staff know me and I can book the whole dojo if need be.
Occasionally I will get invited to dojos via friends and usually it's the type of dojo that you cannot get into without an introduction and no photos are allowed. Those sorts of places are very special and private.

About the photos
My weapon is a nagamaki, its blade is different to a naginata. On horseback martial arts is called bajobugei.
Nagamaki is a type of sword that developed from the Odachi. The one I'm holding is 170cm long, with a blade length of 74cm. It weighs about 1.4kg. I'm used to this length as my yumi is 221cm but the weight plus being elevated on horseback was something else.

📌長巻の武器としての発展過程とは異なり、長巻を扱う武術である長巻術は、剣術系の技法ではなく、薙刀術系の技法で構成されている。また、江戸時代に成立した長巻術の中には、薙刀術と混同している流派もあった。
📌As with the spear/yari, it was an important weapon on the battlefield. When the samurai's weapons moved from naginata and odachi to spears, they were used by ashigaru and cavalry as highly powerful weapons. In the Muromachi period, it was the main weapon along with the Naginata.
槍と並び、戦場では重視された武器である。武士の振るう武器が薙刀や野太刀から、槍に移ると、高い威力を持つ武器として徒歩兵にも騎馬武者にも用いられるようになった。室町時代には薙刀と並んで主力武器であり、戦国時代には「槍が使えないなら長巻を使え」という言が残されている。 ウィキペディアより

I had just finished practice and this is my relaxation for the day. They are so sweet and love a back scratch.
This year will be my 2nd year learning washiki bajutsu (Japanese traditional equestrianism) and sports yabusame (competitive Japanese horseback archery). The equipment, horses and techniques are all very different to British and Western riding and are also amazingly interesting💡

To help raise awareness for indigenous horses we ride on Japanese horses called Kiso uma. The traditional/antique horse tack we use is made for their stout bodies. They are well known for their hard working no nonsense attitude, their good memory and even temperament. And they are snuggly and so sweet too💙
木曽馬は丈夫で働きもので、温和で従順な性格を持つ。
Kiso uma is one of the eight horse breeds of Japan. It is the only native horse breed from Honshu. Like most other Japanese native breeds, it is critically endangered.
本州の在来種は木曽馬のみである。短足胴長であり、体幅が広いところが特徴的。平安時代から江戸時代にかけて、武士の馬として使用された。
The Kiso is a small horse, but mid-sized in relation to other Japanese native breeds. I love its long hair and stocky build.
The breed originates from the Kiso Valley and Kiso Sanmyaku mountain range in Nagano, and Higashimino region, Gifu.
These guys are samurai horses. During the Meiji era the breed was severely affected by breeding programmes of the Imperial Army, which wanted taller horses and ordered that Kiso stallions be gelded.
一時絶滅寸前であったが木曽馬保存会が中心に活動が行なわれた結果、飼育数は増加した。しかし以前のような乗用、農耕を目的とした需要はなく、現在は200頭以下だそう。
Thanks to specialised breeding programs and horse ranches like this one, little by little the population is growing once again.

The other day I visited Gunma International Field Archery Range to try recurve barebow!
群馬国際フィールドアーチェリーを遊びに行きました！ベアボーというサイトがついてない、りカーブ弓だけでやってみました。
Gunma Pref is about 50min from Tokyo by shinkansen and is literally at the center of Japan, surrounded by mountains and volcanos that create the ideal environment for hot springs, snow sports, and other outdoor adventures!
フィールドアーチェリーとはお外、自然の中で行う。今回は群馬でやってみました。
The day I went in December it was FREEZING haha literally. The temp was about minus 4 and it was super windy😂 Even so I had an awesome time.
当日は氷点下と風が強かったです(笑)とっても寒かったが楽しかったです。
I rented equipment. I wasn't shooting super long range as this was only my second time doing recurve and my first time barebow outdoors. りカーブ２回目、お外は初めてで的の距離が基本近かったです。道具はレンタルしました。
They gave me 16# bow. I'm not sure about the arrows and there was no finger sling so my bow grip leave room to be desired I know. Next time I can move up in bow weight hopefully.
弓力16ポンドの弓でスタート。フィンガースリングはなしで。次回は弓力上がるといいね。
What can I say!! Being outdoors was just awesome! Fresh air blue sky in the wood finding targets at high/low/weird angles, it was awesome. I will be going back and now I want my own bow😂
そして、大自然採光でした！綺麗な青空の下で弓引いて幸せでした😃的が色んなアングルにあって面白いし、森の中散歩しながらあーチャーリーできるなんてとても楽しいね。
How did it compare to kyudo?
Its like comparing 🍎 and oranges🍊. They are both round but super different.
Field archery is in another league with a totally different type of difficulty.
Kyudo is a martial art, archery a sport. There are big similarities and big differences.

リンゴとオレンジを比べてるようなもんで、どっちも丸いがどっちも違う。武道とスポーツで似てる所もあって、全然違う所もある
Outdoors with the recurve I had to adapt my shooting to each target body angle, aim, just very very different kyudo where basically the target doesn't change height or direction.
ベアボーリカーブは狙い毎回毎回違って、弓道は基本的に的の角度高さが変わらない。
