What's your bow strength?
弓引きの皆さん、弓はなんキロ？
In kyudo our draw weights or bow strengths 弓力 kyuryoku are measured in kilos. The draw strength is 強い tsuyoi or 軽い karui in Japanese.
和弓の世界では弓の引っ張った状態の強さは弓力といいます。弓は重いではなく、強い、軽いです。
I've come to realise that bow strength is quite a personal thing in kyudo. For some people its a way to show off and a type of one upmanship which isn't really encouraged.
弓力について色んな想いがあります。個人の考えと理由があってその弓引いてます。たまに弓力で何か見せつけたい方がいらっしゃいます。
For others it's an experimentational or kenkyu situation where they are seeing how their body and technique changes with different draw weights.
他の方は研究のため、弓の強さによって引き方はどう変わるのか、体はどう変わるのか？色んな方がいます。
Bow purchase isn't really necessary for the first year or so as the draw weight will change quite dramatically (I started at 7k and went to 10k) and dojos will lend you their equipment until you purchase your own.
初心者🔰の時期から一年間ほどは引く力が少しずつ強くなるので過ぎに弓の購入は必要ないし、道場はだいたい弓力が安定するまで弓かしてくれることが多い
For me keeping a manageable draw weight or slightly lower than my regular weight means I can focus on fixing technique without succumbing to tiredness. 個人的に普通に引ける、ほんの少し楽に引けるキロ数なら疲れすぎないし、射法の修正ができます。
A stronger draw weight will give better arrow flight but may be detrimental to technique. We may tire more quickly with a stronger bow and may not be able to shoot as much. Bow usage is up to the individual. 無理して強い弓引くと射が崩れる場合もあり、引く矢数も減る可能性ありますが個人差あります。
In general the more we train the more we can shoot and little by little the stronger the bow we can shoot. ざっくり言うと弓引くほど少しずつは強い弓引けるようになる。
Grading higher up emphasises technique and hit rate so people will sometimes drop the bow strength slightly for grading to be able to show proper control and speed whilst maintaining the hit rate necessary to pass. 弓道の審査では射法を評価されるので、射が綺麗に見せると矢飛びや的中が安定するという数百グラム軽い弓は選ぶ方もいます。
I have a weak bow, middle bow and strong bow now. 10.5, 11.5 and 12.5k this enables me to switch bow depending on my level of tiredness or work on technique if it is necessary.

Tenshin Ryu is a school of hyoho (兵法) or comprehensive military martial arts. It comprises of Kenjutsu (剣術) battojutsu (抜刀術): (the art of drawing the sword), sojutsu (槍術): the spear, jumonji yari jutsu (十文字槍術):the cross-shaped spear, naginatajutsu (薙刀術): the glaive, kusarigamajutsu (鎖鎌術): the chain sickle, tesa jutsu (鉄鎖術): the chain and finally, yawara (柔) unarmed grappling.
天心流兵法は剣術、抜刀術、槍術、十文字槍術、薙刀術、鎖鎌術、柔術を含む兵法です。
This time I tried battojutsu and kenjutsu. 抜刀術, battō-jutsu or the art of drawing the sword, is an old koryu term for what is now iaijutsu.
今回は取材のために抜刀術と剣術の体験させていただきました✨
This koryu uses not only daito, a shoto and an ogi (a fan). It was interesting having so many pieces of equipment attached to me. お稽古には大刀 (だいとう)、
小刀 (しょうとう)と扇 (おうぎ)を基本的に身に付けます。
I visited okeiko in Kawagoe, Saitama and my teacher was
Daihan Takizawa Dofu. Since meeting Takizawa sensei a couple of years back I've been so impressed by him. He is a yabusame, bajobugei, and hinawaju practitioner amongst other things and I was looking forward to be taught by him.

We worked on posture and hand movements, removing the sword from its sheath, sitting and standing, removing the sword and placing it next to us as we sit.
Etiquette and reiho is of high importance in Tenshin Ryu and during training and simple acts like walking standing and sitting use specific muscles and timing when performed.
The first and last photo show a part of movement called Toriikuzushinokurai.

Tenshin Ryu has branches worldwide( Italy, Spain, Australia and Russia) and regularly offer online and live keiko sessions in English.

In Japan and around the world, February 22nd is Ninja no Hi 忍者の日 or Ninja Day.
Feb 22nd is a play on the word two in Japanese (ni) like the ni in ninja (忍者), but with nin or shinobu (忍) referring to endurance, patience or restraint.
2015年に登録した記念日であり、
日付は忍者の忍、忍術の忍など、忍を重ねた「ニン（2）ニン（2）ニン（2）」と読む語呂合わせから。 2月2日から2月22日を「忍者月間」とし、日本忍者協議会が主催となり日本各地で行われている忍者イベントのPRを行っている
Since its establishment in 2015, the aim of Ninja Day is to raise awareness and interest in the traditions and culture relating to the ninja. Here in Japan there are events happening both online and in person.
The cities of Iga and Kōka (both located in present-day Mie Prefecture)are especially active in celebrating as they were two of the major regions famous for ninja activity, back in 16th and 17th centuries.
To celebrate ninja no hi 忍者の日 I visited the Ninja Dojo in Asakusa for some much needed shuriken practice❇️I practised with bo shuriken again too and managed to hit straight on for the first time! (hit the tatami but its better than nothing!)
忍者の日記念として、久しぶりに浅草で手裏剣と棒手裏剣の練習しました！改めて手裏剣の楽しさを味わい😃と棒手裏剣の難しさを再確認(笑)

After hinawaju okeiko everyone went to Sugiyama Castle (杉山城, Sugiyama-jō). Sugiyama-jo was a Sengoku period castle located in what is now Ranzan in Saitama.
火縄銃お稽古の後、嵐山にある杉山城跡行きました。午後から団体とイベントがありました。
The group held an event in association with the Castle ruins preservation society to draw interest and awareness to the area.The site and its ruins are now protected as a National Historic Site.The date of construction is estimated at late 15th century to early 16th century however its is now ruins.
地元の杉山城跡保存会の皆さんで杉山城跡まで歩いて、撮影がありました。
杉山城は戦国時代の山城で、約14万平方メートルという狭い範囲の中で、高低差を利用しながらおよそ10の郭を配置した縄張りです。
こうした高度な築城技術が高く評価され、「築城の教科書」「戦国期城郭の最高傑作のひとつ」といわれています。
Walking up in a procession was so awesome. Everyone had their sashimono, their hinawaju and their armor. 法螺貝なりながら、皆さんと歩いてて、最高に良かったです。皆さんフル鎧と、火縄銃持って歩いてました✨
The troughs and dead ends built into the ground along the way were amazing. They were to confuse attackers and to permit defenders to fire back from many angles from above in the castle.
平成20年には比企城館跡群として国指定史跡に指定され、研究者やお城好き、歴史ファンの方々が県外からも訪れる隠れた観光スポットとなっています。
Along the way there was a member responsible for sounding the horagai called a kaiyaku🦪
法螺貝の担当が貝役と言いまして、大昔法螺貝に良くなれてる山伏ががその貝役でした🦪
In war, the shell was called jinkai, was one of several signal devices used by samurai. It was used to signal troops to attack, withdraw, or change strategies, in the same way a bugle or flugelhorn was used in other countries.
戦国時代には合戦における戦陣の合図や戦意高揚のために、陣貝と呼ばれる法螺貝が用いられた。

As some people already know in Japan on Feb 14th it's usual for women to give men chocolate, then on White Day: March 14th men give cookies or another sweet back to women. Interesting cultural differences.海外ではあんまりワイトディーは存在しなく、母国ニュージーでは2月14日に皆は皆にプレゼントやチョコ、お花あげる感じが多いかな。

To get a feel of a kyudo archers ability have a look at their angles and lines, even when they are moving.
射手の弓と矢の角度を注目下さい。動きながらでも見てみて下さい。
When walking our bows must be 10cm off the floor. 歩く時は弓が床の10cm上の高さを保つ、体の中心に来る。
The flat line of the arrow or slighty tip lowered we call mizuno nagare, flow of the water.
矢は真っ直ぐか先が少しした向き(水の流れ)
The bow straight up and down (not tilted)even when going from sitting to standing.
座った姿勢から、立った姿勢、足踏み、弓引く時も弓が大体上下真っ直ぐ。
The lines are really calming for me visually. Training your body to produce these lines takes alot of practice.個人的にこの真っ直ぐ、斜めのラインが落ち着く。見てお櫃く、やって落ち着く。自然体でバランスよく弓矢を使うのは長年の稽古が必要。
During our kata or hassetsu flat lines and straight up and down lines can be found on 5 places on our body if our form is correct. This is called 「Go ju ju monji 」五重十文字 I will talk about it another day😃
弓道の形は八節(はっせつ)といいますが体に縦横線(十になる)場所、5ヶ所あります。今度話します😃
