The bow and arrow, which have been used as tools since the hunting era, became weapons during the war era, and are now popular all over the world as a martial art for mental and physical training.
狩猟の時代から道具として使われてきた弓矢は、戦いの時代に武器となり、現代では心身鍛錬の武道として世界中で親しまれています。
"YUMI (bow) to ZEN You, Me and Zen" is a group of KYUDO enthusiasts who practice in Tokyo or Saitama, and also posts information about KYUDO on SNS. It is accepting participants' experience lessons.
弓道サークル「弓と禅 You, Me and Zen」は東京や埼玉で稽古会を行う弓道愛好家の集まりで、SNSでも弓道に関する発信をしています。
Ms. Jessica Gerrity is the vice president of the group. She experienced KYUDO in 2017, and has continued to practice under the guidance of Mr. Takehiko Sakamoto, who obtained the title of teacher.
副会長のジェシカ・ゲリティーさんは2017年に弓道を体験し、その後は駒場体育館弓道場で坂本武彦先生の指導を受けて稽古を重ねながら、TBSテレビ「世界くらべてみたら」の外国人メンバーとしても活躍中です。
「弓と禅 You, Me and Zen」は経験の有無にかかわらず、弓道に関心のある方の体験も受け入れています。

タイミングと間の話
In life, in kyudo and in all martial arts (as I am learning) timing is key. 人生で、弓道で、武道で、タイミング 間(ま)は大切です。
I'm trying to work on timing for my kyudo technique at the moment. We have 8 kata the hassetsu which should be performed smoothly connected and flowing from one to the next. 今弓道でもなぎなたで間の研究してます。弓道では八の型(八節)があって、最初から最後まで繋がるよう余計な動きをせず、速度はズレたりしないよう、行ってます。
When one or more of the eight movements is faster or slower than the others it stands out quite a lot. This is what I'm working on at the moment.
八節のどこかがはやかった遅かったら結構目立ちます。会までがゆっくり、会はそこまで長くないと目立ちます。結構私は全体のバランスを考えてもっと良い射目指してます😃
I have been asked before
「Timing in kyudo as a single person martial art is simple right? 」
Not really. When we perform taihai our ceremonial shooting we shoot in sequence with 4 other archers. Our movements to some extent are timed to the movements of the archer in from of us this is called (Ma).
一人で行う武道として、弓道は他の人のタイミングは気にしなくても良いでしょう? と聞かれた事あります。
体配、射礼行うと他に4人の射手と合わせて行いますので前後の射手に間、タイミング、息合い合わせて行います。
When we enter the shajo our steps are in sequence, we sit, bow, stand up and move together, nock arrows all at once. The synchronization and timing is very beautiful to watch, it would be nice to make a video sometime of taihai to show you.
射所を入所する時、合わせて歩きます、座る事、ゆする事、立つこと、一体感があって動きます。弓立てる時、矢をつがえる時、シクロに近いような動きしてます。
見て心が落ち着く。いつか体配の動画をとって皆さんに見せたい☺️

The other week Anming san @anming7 and I went to practice sports yabusame together for the first time. This was her first time on a Japanese horse, riding Japanese style and trying horseback archery (sports yabusame)

We had some chats about Japanese culture and wearing martial arts uniform. We bounced ideas off each other and found we have quite a similar value set and way of thinking when it comes to double standards that surround culture and the appreciation of culture.日本文化や武道のユニフォームの話しました。価値観や考え方が似てるところ結構ありました。
As a budoka or martial artist and a long term resident of Japan, wearing the correct uniform for each martial art is expected and necessary.国籍関係なく武道家として正しい服装は着るべきはお互い同感でした。
Sports yabusame also has hakama and dougi as its uniform. Then for competitions and gradings some people wear kimono or hitatare.スポーツ流鏑馬でも稽古着、大会や審査には射籠手と直垂など着ます。
📌ABOUT HITATARE
It's in two pieces, the top part simply called ｢hitatare｣ and the bottom part is ｢hitatare hakama｣
現代ではまだ色んな場面で直垂見れます。能、流鏑馬、射礼など私はスポーツ流鏑馬や和式馬術の稽古、検定、大会などで着ます。
You can see hitatare these days in noh performances, during yabusame ceremonies and kyudo related ceremonies. I'm will wear hitatare for my sports yabusame gradings and competitions. Hitatare is popular among sports yabusame archers too.
📌平安時代から存在する物であって、後で武士の服として使われました。
📌The hitatare originated in the early Heian period becoming common samurai clothing later in the same period. By the mid 13th century, hitatare had become the standard samurai garment.
緑と紫の生地が光の当て具合によって色が変わります💚💜今まで見た事ないような生地で大好きです。
I love the colour and the pattern, depending where the light hits it turns from purple to green💚💜

This type of kyujutsu is very relaxed. Everyone's welcome. Chatting while we practice, its a nice way to make friends and in my case it leads to a connection to another martial art!

📌In case you haven't read about shihan mato, its a traditional type of archery or kyujutsu from Miyazaki Prefecture that started about 400 years ago. This form of archery has been designated an Intangible Cultural Property by Obi City.
四半的弓道始めての方ですが、宮崎県発祥の伝統弓術で約400年前から始まっております。弓は短く、矢長く、座って引きます😃
Shihan mato started in lands governed by the Shimazu clan during a time of warfare between 1467 and 1603 in what is now Miyazaki prefecture on the southern island of Kyushu.
Peasants living in Shimazu lands were allowed to practice archery only when seated because their feudal overlords feared they might use their bows to rebel.
Some sources mention that during the Warring states period, military commanders also practiced shihan mato for fun. During the Edo period it became popular among samurai warriors too, in the mid-Meiji period, it became a casual type of archery which was enjoyed with shochu at banquets.
戦国時代には武将の酒宴時に、江戸時代には武士の間で普及し、明治中期頃には酒宴の席などで焼酎を酌み交わしながら親しまれる娯楽へと変化した競技。
📌The short bows are called hankyu ( 半弓)the arrows are super long(1.36m) and the target is 8m away, we sit to shoot, draw is till our chin and its a pinch draw so no glove like kyudo.
📌的まで8.2m 矢長さ1.36m
口割り/頬付けがあごの方にあります。ゆがけを使わない、ピンチ式で弓引きます✨滑らないよう、矢はずに滑り止めついてます。
的まで四間半、弓矢ともに四尺五寸、的も四寸五分とすべてのサイズが四半であることが名前の由来といわれ、現在は市の無形文化財に登録されている。
📌The kuchiwari/hozuke (the anchor point) is around the chin area. We dont use a glove just a pinch draw. There are non slip covers on the ends of the arrows. The targets are also tiny at 13.7cm too! 🎯
📌Like kyudo there are hassetsu.But different to kyudo: there are left handed bows, you sit on tatami to shoot and people that prefer chairs or need to use wheelchairs are welcomed. I love that.
