Happy Wednesday 🔹I tried Oda Nobunaga yoroi! 織田信長の鎧着てみた！ 🔹Swipe for videos! 先日 鎧兜甲冑工房丸武産業 東京店 行きました!　侍のドラマや映画に使われてる甲冑が丸武さんの作品です。 The other day I visited the famous armor maker: Marutake at their showroom in Tokyo. @marutake.chiyoda A large percentage of their armor are used in period and samurai dramas and movies. If you are a fan you might have come across their armor on the screen. Marutake armor was used in Kagemusha (The Shadow Warrior) and Ran(Revolt) directed by the famous movie director, Akira Kurosawa. 1958年に釣り竿メーカー丸竹として設立、現在に至るまでのTV・ＣＭ・映画・アニメゲームキャラクター・武者行列・博物館/文化財指定の写しやリース鎧の作成してます。 Their handmade armor has also been designated as a Traditional Craft from the area they are made: Kagoshima Prefecture. Sometime I would love to visit and talk to the craftspeople over at the head office too. 本社は鹿児島にありますが、鹿児島県指定の伝統工芸品として認定されてます。いつか本社行きたいと思います。そこで職人の方の作業してる様子みたいし、話聞きたいです。 I was there for an interview with the shop for my article for budojapan.com @budojapan but to my surprise the staff let me try on a set of armor! 武道ジャパン @budojapan さんの取材のために丸武行きましたが、鎧も試着していいよ😃をいってくれました! They chose the Oda Nobunaga armor that was made for the 1992 period drama called Nobunaga and is very special. 織田信長（大河モデル） (おだのぶなが・たいがどらまもでる) 1992年大河ドラマ　信長 のために製作した作品です。 Shop regulations meant I wore my mask inside the armor hence the white mouth😆The staff taught me to tie my yoroi hakama (the hakama I'm wearing) and my waraji (the straw shoes) which was awesome of them to give me a mini lesson. 面歩の中にマスク着用で口が白くなってますが😅素敵な鎧です。鎧袴と草鞋の結び方も教えていただきました✨ They went ahead and put the menpo on (face protection) and I stepped outside onto the street, much to the surprise of the people walking past! お店を出たところ、お店通ってる方少しびっくり(笑) I realised that when worn correctly even armor made for a larger man like the the one I wore, should be comfortable. Happy Sunday💕 Meet cameraman: Okuno san & Getsurei Shakai: in-dojo competition 弓道カメラマン:奥野さん & 初めての月例射会 🔹This wonderful photo was taken just after I passed shodan in 2019. The cameraman is Koji Okuno san who is quite well known for his kyudo photos. @kyudophoto この一枚は初段取り立ての頃(2019年3月)にとったものです。カメラマンが 奥野さん @kyudophoto 日本でも海外でも弓道の写真が有名です。 🔹This photo shoot was the first time I met Okuno san. This photo and the others he took are very precious to me as they are the only photos I have of me at my home dojo. This is where I practice mainly. I'm using the bow and glove lent to me by my sensei. The arrows were the first kyudo equipment I ever bought, they are now in New Zealand hopefully being used by another beginner. その時奥野さんと初対面。とってくださった写真がお宝です。ホーム道場でとった写真はこれしかないですし、弓もゆがけが先生から借りてきた物で、矢が初めて買った弓道具。現在その矢がニュージーランドのどっかで使われてます。 🔹This photo represents the real start of my journey in kyudo. I'm very thankful and lucky that he captured this moment in my journey. この一枚が旅の出発という時と思います。写真にしていつでも振り替えてみることができるのは奥野さんに感謝。 🔹Okuno san is quite unique because he has practiced kyudo for a large part of his life. This combination of experience in kyudo and camera ability and artistic sense gives him a perspective that not alot of people have. 奥野さんは弓引きであって、プロのカメラマンでもあるのでユニークな目線で写真をとります。 🔹I think his work shows a side of kyudo that is difficult to find anywhere else. 奥野さんの作品は他にないようなもの。 🔹Today I have my first shakai 「月例射会」We shoot 10 arrows in ceremonial style called zassha together with 4 other people. Even though this is a competition to record the number of hits, the ceremonial movement: taihai is important too. I'm hoping to receive a little feedback on my taihai. Happy Thursday! Talking about Sports Yabusame② Bows & strings スポーツ流鏑馬の話その②:弓&弦 How is 2022 going for you so far? Are you back to training or practicing? 始まったばっかり2022年はいかがでお過ごしでしょうか？お稽古、練習、普段通りに戻ってますか？ In my previous post I talked about arrows 矢 and my hat: kissha gasa 騎射笠  Todays Q&A 🔹What bow do you use? スポーツ流鏑馬の弓は弓道と違いますか? 🔹What is the donut shaped thing you have? ドーナツ🍩みたいな形してる道具ってなんですか？ The bow we use for sports yabusame is a yumi, it is the shorter length called a nami sun. Its 221cm so not exactly short. We use fibreglass or carbon, some people use urushiyumi (lacquered bamboo bows). The required draw weight isn't very strong. I use a 12.5k bow. We shoot from all directions but the bow doesn't really get in the way. We just have to be careful of low hanging trees🌳! スポーツ流鏑馬に使用する弓はグラスファイバー、カーボンでできてる並寸(221cm)の弓です。漆弓ほんのたまに見かけます。本来いろんな方向から射をするが弓はそんなに邪魔にならない。 The 🍩doughnut shaped thing is called a tsurumaki 弦巻. This is a bow string holder! I will do a more in depth post on tsurumaki soon.ドーナツ形の道具は弦を保管する弦巻です。今度詳しい投稿します。 The string is a standard kyudo bowstring with a twist. Bow strings or tsuru 弦 ate traditionally made of hemp fibres asazuru 麻弦, but I use one that incorporates modern materials like kevlar.弦は弓道に使用するものとそんなに変わりませんが、見ないで矢つがえができるよう、矢をつがえるところ、糸でだんご作ってあります。 The nocking point on the bow has wound up cotton creating a ball shape. This is because I don't look when nocking my arrow and rely on my sense of touch to feel when the arrow is nocked and I can start shooting. 🔹Want to learn sports yabusame? Depending on your Japanese level everyone can try sports yabusame. @saddlebackodawara is in Odawara and accepts beginners. You can shoot and ride on the first day. Happy Monday! 🏯川越藩火縄銃鉄砲隊保存会の話 Hinawaju in Saitama: Visiting the Kawagoehan Hinawaju Teppotai Hozonkai (Kawagoe Matchlock Gun Preservation Group) I discovered a hinawaju or samurai matchlock group in the area where I live in Japan: Saitama. I was so excited. I contacted them straight away and was allowed to visit them for a day. 埼玉の火縄銃会,( #川越藩火縄銃鉄砲隊保存会 )の存在を知りました。お稽古の見学を許されました。その貴重の体験からの投稿です。 Part 2 here: #埼玉火縄銃 In the morning they had their practice. In the afternoon they had an event in castle ruins in Saitama. I will talk about the castle event in Prt.2 朝から秩父にある射撃場でお稽古、午後は嵐山にあるイベントという１日の活動企画ありました。 The Hinawaju is a matchlock gun. Please check my story highlight☝️ for further info This group consists of volunteers that devote their time to not only disseminating knowledge of hinawaju, but also antique armor dressing experiences, and hinawaju performances at famous matsuri/festivals in Saitama and around Japan. 会のみんな様はボランティア。様々な活動されて、甲冑の展示会、甲冑体験、演武披露など、川越の魅力発信してます。 You can see my antique armor experience at #jessinarmor この間のWABISABI大祭典でアンティーク甲冑着せてくれました They practice at a gun range high up in the Chichibu mountains. It was was decided I would participate in their practice in a supporting role! I could not believe it. I felt very lucky to be included. #射撃場 について、見学ですが、見守り役割でなんと甲冑着て、ご一緒にさせていただくことになった！とってもワクワクしてきた☺️ They dressed me in antique armor and gave me an amazing Peacock feather sashimono. Peacock is said to be strong enough to eat poisonous snakes and still live and is therefore a symbol used to ward off evil. Sashimono were used from the Sengoku period to show location and which side they belonged to on the battlefield. #甲冑 の着付けをし、戦国時代から戦争中居場所が分かるよう指物もしました。 私は赤旗と孔雀の羽の物使いました。孔雀は毒蛇や害虫を食べるほど生命力が高いので、邪気を払うと信仰されてきた鳥です。 We entered the keiko area in a special formation. The gunners practiced their different firing patterns and movements. 🔹Happy Friday Talking about starting kyudo and finding a teacher. 弓道の先生、弓道を始める時の話し At my dojo I have a sensei and I don't talk about him much.  People who do budo will know the relationship with your sensei is quite special, unique and sacred.弓道場では先生がいます、あんまり先生の話しはしてません。武道なさってる方はご存じと思いますが、先生との関係が少し特別で歩み道のガイドとメンターである。 I think your sensei has a huge impact on who you become as a practitioner. In kyudo most times when you start learning as an adult you will join a beginners class at the local dojo. 社会人として弓道始まる時、地元の道場で初心者教室を参加。 You attend this class and are taught by different senseis each time. Instructor rank and above  volunteers take time to help beginners. 教室の時の先生方がボランティアであって、場合によって色んな先生が教えてくれます。 During these intense few weeks your mind is full trying to learn the kata (hassetsu) and each time different teachers observe they may change things another teacher told you was ok. This can't be helped as everyone's technique is slightly different but as a beginner its slightly overwhelming. 八節(形)覚えるのに結構必死で、さらに色んな先生から教えるのに少しずつ違うこと教えてくれるので頭がいっぱいになることが多い。教室完了後は運が良ければ自然と相性がよい先生があって、その先生のスケジュールによってみてくれたりしてます。 If you're lucky after you join the dojo on a regular basis one of senseis you met during the course will offer to look after you or you will naturally gravitate to them. Senseis schedule allowing they will watch you sometimes and take responsibility for you, still on a voluntary basis out of service for budo. 自分の場合はニュージーランド弓道連盟と大阪の佐藤先生よりご紹介をいただいて、直接先生と繋がりました。 Via the New Zealand Kyudo Federation and Sato sensei I was referred to a sensei in my area. I called and talked to him and he said to come visit the dojo. I joined the dojo via my sensei which is a little rare here and I am forever grateful for the way everything turned out. Thanks to him my approach to kyudo is more holistic in nature. I rode an indigenous Japanese horse called a 「Kiso Uma」with a traditional horse tack. We had beginners that day so the hami : horse bit, is a standard one. 🔹鎧甲冑というと鉄でできておりますがそこまで重たくないです(20㌔前後) 着ないで乗る、着てる状態で乗る、さらに弓を引くとなるとやはり大きいな違い色々ありました。 The armor wasn't too heavy (about 20 plus kilos) but riding and using a yumi in armor on horseback was very different and interesting as you'd expect 🔹弓が並寸直心バンブー11k、矢が小山の神頭矢 The yumi I used was a nami sun 221cm 11k (jikishin bamboo) and we used itamato (wooden targets) so I used jindoya with wooden arrow heads. 🔹体の重心が変わり、乗りながら研究して、バランスを探してました。鞍、鐙、手綱の使い方が少し変わり、研究中の立ち透かしをいかしてみたりして、上下の動きはどう変わるのか？と試してみました。 The weight of the armor was both an aid and a hindrance. The heaviness pushed me down and gave me stability when riding slowly, but when we trotted the maedate on the kabuto moved back and forth along with the horse (see last clip on the video). I needed to adjust my posture and lift myself slightly off the saddle using my legs to gain stability. 牧場縄間が鎧の音でビビるより走るっと言う合図だそうで、スワイプして動画をみてみると、ジャンプまでいけた(笑) 「The armor switches the horse on」 My sensei let me know this however I didn't realise just how genki 🐴he would get! Swipe to the video and you will see. Listen for the sounds of the armor. To the horse this metal on metal clanging sound is a signal to speed up. So I got a horse to jump in armor too, which was a first😂 🔹馬上の鎧甲冑乗りはとっても勉強になりました！研究できる機会が中なかなくて、今回沢山乗れて嬉しかった✨Shooting my yumi in armor on horseback was quite an eye opening experience!  Being able to research, test and experiment this was a very special opportunity for me. I value everyone's comments and opinions.  Thank you for being supportive and keeping everything positive💜 I hope everyone has an awesome 2022💗 2022年になりました。去年沢山の応援、暖かいコメント、ポジティブの雰囲気本当にありがとうございました😃活動が毎日楽しいです。 Considering the pandemic I had a pretty amazing year career wise last year. But as with most social media behind the scenes everything is not always rainbows and flowers. I'm sure everyone has their own struggles too. Being a mum to 3 children is really challenging but budo has given me some me time in a really peaceful headspace which balances me so much. 去年コロナが長引きした中で色んなお仕事ができて幸せ。ドラマやら雑誌の表紙やら映画声出演など。皆さん同じと思いますがSNSでみる一部の裏では苦労もあり、3児の母でありながら活動続けることが武道のお陰でうまくできてると思います。弓道だって、道場入って別世界、静かに落ち着いた時間過ごせるからこそ日常頑張れる😃 In 2022 my activities and posts will continue to focus on unique and wonderful aspects of Japanese culture that I find interesting and I think are accessible. (And alot of kyudo) I hope that if you ever had the chance to visit Japan or Saitama that you could try some of the martial arts or cultural activities I've talked about. 2022年では去年のまま、日本文化のユニークな、個人的に素敵とおもところ、と、なるべく皆さん野手が届けるものに　紹介続きたいと思います。 Through my job as the Love Saitama Ambassador I hope to bring you traditional aspects of Japanese culture and information on interesting places to see. 埼玉県のラブ埼玉アンバサダー(観光PR大使)では少しずつ観光地も、伝統文化も届けてきたいと思ってます😃 Last year thanks to @budojapan, I was able to try being a ninja and try samurai combat. Kyudo also uses soya but as you can see in photo the nock is very different, the shaft is thicker, and the fletching is much wider with only two feathers.
