The other week Anming san @anming7 and I went to practice sports yabusame together for the first time. This was her first time on a Japanese horse, riding Japanese style and trying horseback archery (sports yabusame)

We had some chats about Japanese culture and wearing martial arts uniform. We bounced ideas off each other and found we have quite a similar value set and way of thinking when it comes to double standards that surround culture and the appreciation of culture.日本文化や武道のユニフォームの話しました。価値観や考え方が似てるところ結構ありました。
As a budoka or martial artist and a long term resident of Japan, wearing the correct uniform for each martial art is expected and necessary.国籍関係なく武道家として正しい服装は着るべきはお互い同感でした。
Sports yabusame also has hakama and dougi as its uniform. Then for competitions and gradings some people wear kimono or hitatare.スポーツ流鏑馬でも稽古着、大会や審査には射籠手と直垂など着ます。
📌ABOUT HITATARE
It's in two pieces, the top part simply called ｢hitatare｣ and the bottom part is ｢hitatare hakama｣
現代ではまだ色んな場面で直垂見れます。能、流鏑馬、射礼など私はスポーツ流鏑馬や和式馬術の稽古、検定、大会などで着ます。
You can see hitatare these days in noh performances, during yabusame ceremonies and kyudo related ceremonies. I'm will wear hitatare for my sports yabusame gradings and competitions. Hitatare is popular among sports yabusame archers too.
📌平安時代から存在する物であって、後で武士の服として使われました。
📌The hitatare originated in the early Heian period becoming common samurai clothing later in the same period. By the mid 13th century, hitatare had become the standard samurai garment.
緑と紫の生地が光の当て具合によって色が変わります💚💜今まで見た事ないような生地で大好きです。
I love the colour and the pattern, depending where the light hits it turns from purple to green💚💜

This type of kyujutsu is very relaxed. Everyone's welcome. Chatting while we practice, its a nice way to make friends and in my case it leads to a connection to another martial art!

📌In case you haven't read about shihan mato, its a traditional type of archery or kyujutsu from Miyazaki Prefecture that started about 400 years ago. This form of archery has been designated an Intangible Cultural Property by Obi City.
四半的弓道始めての方ですが、宮崎県発祥の伝統弓術で約400年前から始まっております。弓は短く、矢長く、座って引きます😃
Shihan mato started in lands governed by the Shimazu clan during a time of warfare between 1467 and 1603 in what is now Miyazaki prefecture on the southern island of Kyushu.
Peasants living in Shimazu lands were allowed to practice archery only when seated because their feudal overlords feared they might use their bows to rebel.
Some sources mention that during the Warring states period, military commanders also practiced shihan mato for fun. During the Edo period it became popular among samurai warriors too, in the mid-Meiji period, it became a casual type of archery which was enjoyed with shochu at banquets.
戦国時代には武将の酒宴時に、江戸時代には武士の間で普及し、明治中期頃には酒宴の席などで焼酎を酌み交わしながら親しまれる娯楽へと変化した競技。
📌The short bows are called hankyu ( 半弓)the arrows are super long(1.36m) and the target is 8m away, we sit to shoot, draw is till our chin and its a pinch draw so no glove like kyudo.

口割り/頬付けがあごの方にあります。ゆがけを使わない、ピンチ式で弓引きます✨滑らないよう、矢はずに滑り止めついてます。
的まで四間半、弓矢ともに四尺五寸、的も四寸五分とすべてのサイズが四半であることが名前の由来といわれ、現在は市の無形文化財に登録されている。
📌The kuchiwari/hozuke (the anchor point) is around the chin area. We dont use a glove just a pinch draw. There are non slip covers on the ends of the arrows. The targets are also tiny at 13.7cm too! 🎯
📌Like kyudo there are hassetsu.But different to kyudo: there are left handed bows, you sit on tatami to shoot and people that prefer chairs or need to use wheelchairs are welcomed. I love that.

📷⑥I was lucky to was meet the Mayor of Saitama Prefecture, Ono san. While we stopped to talk he mentioned he love New Zealand wine 🍷which was so nice. Check out his amazing kimono too.

📷️⑧I got to dance the Omiya Odori which is a traditional dance with a song about the famous Hikawa Shrine.
大宮おどりが楽しかった！さいたま市大宮西地区日本民踊研究会さんの踊りを覚えて最後みんなで踊りました😃
おどりは昭和９年に披露され、氷川神社の杉並木、機関車、見沼川の源氏螢など大宮の歴史と文化が歌われています。

I receive a lot of questions about how to choose arrows for kyudo.
色んな方から弓道の矢の質問が多いです😊
Arrows depend on arm and body length! First we find out out yazuka or arrow length.
まず、矢束(やづか)はかります。
Measure from the middle of the throat to an outstretched arm plus 10 to 15cm
咽喉の中心より左腕を伸ばして左手の中指の先が届くまでの長さを一般的に矢束と呼びます。
My arrows are 93cm long.
Then we decide arrow weight and shaft thickness. This is dependant on our bow strength.
矢のシャフト太さと重さは弓の強さによって変わります。
Easton make 3 different aluminum shaft types that are rated as followsイーストンのジュラルミン矢はこのように分かれてます:
🔹1913 bow ~13k 24~26g
🔹2015 bow 13k~ 28~31g
🔹2017 bow 20k~ 34~36g
So depending on your bow strength, your draw length and your preferences the shaft thickness will change slightly.
弓の弓力（kg）や、お客様の矢尺（cm）によりご使用するシャフトが変わります。
Arrows are also made from carbon and bamboo.カーボンや竹の矢もあります。
For my daily practice I use duralumin Easton 1913 shaft arrows.
普段稽古ではジュラルミンの1913使用してます。
Duralumin is a lightweight and durable metal shaft material made from a mixture of aluminum and copper.
ジュラルミンとは、アルミニウムと銅を混ぜて作った合金で軽量であり丈夫な金属のシャフトになります。

What's your bow strength?
弓引きの皆さん、弓はなんキロ？
In kyudo our draw weights or bow strengths 弓力 kyuryoku are measured in kilos. The draw strength is 強い tsuyoi or 軽い karui in Japanese.
和弓の世界では弓の引っ張った状態の強さは弓力といいます。弓は重いではなく、強い、軽いです。
I've come to realise that bow strength is quite a personal thing in kyudo. For some people its a way to show off and a type of one upmanship which isn't really encouraged.
弓力について色んな想いがあります。個人の考えと理由があってその弓引いてます。たまに弓力で何か見せつけたい方がいらっしゃいます。
For others it's an experimentational or kenkyu situation where they are seeing how their body and technique changes with different draw weights.
他の方は研究のため、弓の強さによって引き方はどう変わるのか、体はどう変わるのか？色んな方がいます。
Bow purchase isn't really necessary for the first year or so as the draw weight will change quite dramatically (I started at 7k and went to 10k) and dojos will lend you their equipment until you purchase your own.
初心者🔰の時期から一年間ほどは引く力が少しずつ強くなるので過ぎに弓の購入は必要ないし、道場はだいたい弓力が安定するまで弓かしてくれることが多い
For me keeping a manageable draw weight or slightly lower than my regular weight means I can focus on fixing technique without succumbing to tiredness. 個人的に普通に引ける、ほんの少し楽に引けるキロ数なら疲れすぎないし、射法の修正ができます。
A stronger draw weight will give better arrow flight but may be detrimental to technique. We may tire more quickly with a stronger bow and may not be able to shoot as much. Bow usage is up to the individual. 無理して強い弓引くと射が崩れる場合もあり、引く矢数も減る可能性ありますが個人差あります。
In general the more we train the more we can shoot and little by little the stronger the bow we can shoot. ざっくり言うと弓引くほど少しずつは強い弓引けるようになる。
Grading higher up emphasises technique and hit rate so people will sometimes drop the bow strength slightly for grading to be able to show proper control and speed whilst maintaining the hit rate necessary to pass. 弓道の審査では射法を評価されるので、射が綺麗に見せると矢飛びや的中が安定するという数百グラム軽い弓は選ぶ方もいます。
I have a weak bow, middle bow and strong bow now. 10.5, 11.5 and 12.5k this enables me to switch bow depending on my level of tiredness or work on technique if it is necessary.

Tenshin Ryu is a school of hyoho (兵法) or comprehensive military martial arts. It comprises of Kenjutsu (剣術) battojutsu (抜刀術): (the art of drawing the sword), sojutsu (槍術): the spear, jumonji yari jutsu (十文字槍術):the cross-shaped spear, naginatajutsu (薙刀術): the glaive, kusarigamajutsu (鎖鎌術): the chain sickle, tesa jutsu (鉄鎖術): the chain and finally, yawara (柔) unarmed grappling.
天心流兵法は剣術、抜刀術、槍術、十文字槍術、薙刀術、鎖鎌術、柔術を含む兵法です。
This time I tried battojutsu and kenjutsu. 抜刀術, battō-jutsu or the art of drawing the sword, is an old koryu term for what is now iaijutsu.
今回は取材のために抜刀術と剣術の体験させていただきました✨
This koryu uses not only daito, a shoto and an ogi (a fan). It was interesting having so many pieces of equipment attached to me. お稽古には大刀 (だいとう)、
小刀 (しょうとう)と扇 (おうぎ)を基本的に身に付けます。
I visited okeiko in Kawagoe, Saitama and my teacher was
Daihan Takizawa Dofu. Since meeting Takizawa sensei a couple of years back I've been so impressed by him. He is a yabusame, bajobugei, and hinawaju practitioner amongst other things and I was looking forward to be taught by him.
埼玉、川越道場お邪魔しました。代範 滝沢洞風 が指導してくれました。滝沢先生が、流鏑馬、馬上武芸、火縄銃、居合のマルチ武道家。何年か前に滝沢先生と出会えたのですが、素晴らしい活動なさってる方の道場行けるなんてとっても楽しみしてました。
We worked on posture and hand movements, removing the sword from its sheath, sitting and standing, removing the sword and placing it next to us as we sit.
Etiquette and reiho is of high importance in Tenshin Ryu and during training and simple acts like walking standing and sitting use specific muscles and timing when performed.
The first and last photo show a part of movement called Toriikuzushinokurai.

Tenshin Ryu has branches worldwide( Italy, Spain, Australia and Russia) and regularly offer online and live keiko sessions in English.
天心流は色んな国に道場ありますし、オンライン稽古もやってます。
I will post links to Tenshin Ryu history in my story for people that would like to know more. I will be writing an article for @budojapan in more depth. I hope I can visit the Kawagoe dojo again soon.
