The kaburaya: a whistling signal arrow
The other day I posted a reel showing me shooting a kaburaya, a signal arrow.
Kaburaya were used by the samurai class of feudal Japan. Before battle an army archer was said to have shot 5 kaburaya with specific fletching in succession to signal the start of a battle.
When shot into the air the arrow becomes a sort of wind instrument that emits an wonderful eerie sound.
This time lets take a closer look at the different parts of the arrow and the process of making it.
I'm still researching kaburaya but I would like to show you some photos I have gathered.
Carved from wood the arrow tip is made from two main pieces. The very tip and the base. The two parts of the arrow are hollowed out and openings are been placed at specific points. To complete this process the artisan at his workshop (Kobo Sou) used a wood lathe here and I had a go at it too (see video)
After the hollow kaburaya pieces are ready, the artisan lacquers the parts with urushi and sets them to dry, once dried repeats the process over and over until the desired result of a smooth finish and depth of colour is reached.
The bamboo shaft is also lacquered in the same way. Cotton and thicker string is wound around specific points the bamboo shaft and a metal pin is inserted into the top/lid part of the kaburaya.
The shaft is fletched according to the customers needs and a nocking point is added. Different fletching carries different meanings for people as I found out after making my first arrow. I now have two, one a wishing arrow and one a cursed arrow 🙃

Talking about the yari (spear)
Recently I've had several opportunities to use spears or yari 槍 of differing lengths and types, and it reminded me I tried two different Japanese spears a couple of months back!
Yari (槍) is the term for a traditionally made Japanese blade or nihonto in the form of a spear. The martial art of the yari is called sōjutsu.
I posted about the jumonji yari several weeks back, then the other more simple looking yari I'm holding is called a suyari.
Also on my head is an eboshi. More info below⏬
There are over 15 different blade shapes and several variations for shaft shape. Yari length varies hugely (90cm-6m) with a blade length of (2-90cm) and a total weight of (1-6kg).
Originally based on Chinese spears, Yari really became main weapons around the Muromachi period and latter half of the 16th Century. They also appear quite frequently in ukiyo-e sometimes with impaled heads on them….
The huge variety in shape and length make yari very interesting to research. Sometime soon I will post about an experience of naginata vs Oyari I had the other day.
📌About eboshi
This time I'm wearing an old style samurai eboshi. Eboshi come in many different types of softness and hardness and many different shapes. Each shape denotes the type of person they were and their status. This specific eboshi is ori eboshi.

Visiting a very special dojo with very special bamboo!
Back in November last year I got the very amazing chance to be involved in the selection and cutting of bamboo for bows (yumi) for Koyama Kyudo Shop @koyamakyugu Established in 1780, this shop and its kyudo equipment are very well known.
The bow making process is usually left to the experts only here so just being able to help was a massive honour. It was an experience I will never forget!
I will repost to my stories if you haven't read the 1st post yet!
The bamboo I helped cut was taken to be dried over in a place called Kitamoto in Saitama. @koyamakyudo has a branch there and the very interesting thing is, it's connected to a special dojo.
Opened in 1981, this dojo practices Ogasawara Ryu, a 830 year old traditional Japanese system of martial arts and etiquette, formalised and handed down by the Ogasawara clan. But more on that in a moment.
Together with Kurosu sensei @ken.kurosu we got to see one part of the drying process with the bamboo we cut!
The bamboo for yumi is stored both standing inside the dojo and flat in the yamichi (the area between the shooting area and the target area) it's a very unique sight to behold! The storage place, length, and temperature is decided by the bow maker.
I was amazing to see the bamboo we cut, months later, getting reading to be taken to another part of Japan where the process of takeawase 竹合わせand takekezuri 竹削り will take place. In a 12 step process today was about the 3rd step.

🖋️Talking about the yatate
Have you heard of a yatate before?
It's the samurai version of a pencil case and ninjas also used it too!
The yatate has been around since the Kamakura period (1185-1333). It contains a traditional Japanese bamboo brush and an ink pot filled with cotton or silk which holds liquid sumi ink.
In the past before pens and pencils were invented, bushi or samurai would use a brush and ink during wars to make notes and sent letters. But can you imagine that on horseback while fighting?
A very tiny inkwell and a long hollow space for holding a brush was invented. Bushi would keep this ink and brush set in together with their arrows in the bottom of their quivers, and the name yatate literally meaning arrow stand, was born.
The sets were very convenient, but the ink well was small and he demand for larger ink containers brought about a change in its shape.
During the Edo period (1603-1867) most were the newer shape hishaku-gata like mine in the photos.
Originally used exclusively by the Samurai, the yatate became very popular with merchants, scholars, and were carried on or in the kimono obi.
Many Ukiyo-e depict yatate. I think the idea of having a mobile version of brush and ink is so cool. When I showed it to several Japanese people at my dojo, they had no idea what it was.
Yatate come in many shapes and sizes, some with beautiful decorations on the outside adding a personal touch.
The yatate was eventually replaced in popularity with the fountain pen. But I like that the name never changed and kept its samurai roots.

Its time to smile(kyudo is fun)
This video was taken at a dojo practice that my senpai and I set up about three years ago called You Me and Zen.
We both wanted a place were people could not only try kyudo if they wanted to, but experienced archers could have space where they could relax and practice at their own pace.
Sometimes it is nice to be able to laugh and smile when you do kyudo too😄
You can hear the happy chatter in the background as people discuss technique, equipment and daily life.

Talking about mokuso: still/calm mind
What is mokuso and do you do mokuso before you practice budo?
Even though the disciplines of kyudo and naginata are physically very different, everytime I practice I notice many similarities between them.
Today however I want to talk about a slight difference. Naginata has a mokuso time whereas in my experience kyudo is more flexible.
Mokuso is commonly translated as meditation, mokuso literally means “silent/still” (moku) + “thoughs/thinking” (so). In other words, mokuso is the act of silencing one's thoughts.
In naginata we all sit together, everyone does mokuso at the same time. My guess is as there is a partner in naginata its good to get on the same page as a group.
In kyudo before a group performance, archers will come together in a circle and bow to each other to connect themselves. But in individual practice we train at our own pace.
So how does mokuso work in kyudo? For me I take the times I'm sitting seiza to do mokuso.
Like when I am putting my kake on.I will take a deep breath then think about one or two points I want to work ok during keiko.
When we aren't shooting we are either standing or sitting seiza so there are many opportunities for mokuso.
After practice mokuso will calm your heart and help you reflect upon your practice. It is a time to reflect, on whether the practice was good or bad, and my own actions and attitude. As I am cleaning up I think about areas I want to work on next time.

Kaburaya: the whistling arrow
This is a kaburaya
I'm still researching these wonderful arrows but I wanted you to hear the sound they make!
Carved from wood the arrow tip of this arrow is hollowed out and openings have been placed at specific points in the top. This means when shot into the air the arrow becomes a sort of wind instrument and I think it sounds amazing!
In the year 940 a kaburaya was shot from a Temple to the surprise of many. After this kaburaya became associated with misfortune befalling enemy soldiers and began to be used in ceremonies done before battle.*1 調べによりますと940年にあるお寺から鏑矢が飛ばした。
They were fletched on purpose with cursed feathers never used in archery, in order to insult, intimidate, and cast bad fortune on the enemy. *2
Kaburaya were used by the samurai class of feudal Japan. Before battle an army archer was said to have shot 5 kaburaya in succession to signal the start of a battle.
In saying this though, other kyūjutsu or koryu archery schools perform a Shinto ceremony involving the kaburaya and ritual purification. The arrow is then called hikime蟇目. Its seems that the tip is sometimes made from deer horn. The whistling sound when flying through the air is believed to scatter evil spirits and purify the area.
In modern Japan, cursed arrows used for battle are very rare. More often than not if you pass by a temple and you are very lucky, you will see the hikime ritual shooting instead.

🔹How do I start kyudo?
I get asked this very often. Very good question. Firstly it depends where you live. If you live out of Japan the fastest way is to search 「kyudo + your country」
The International Kyudo Federation has a listing of all dojos around the world.
www.ikyf.org
Sometimes there are Heki ryu dojos and Honda Ryu dojos too both koyru and they have their own websites.
You contact them and find out where there are, when there practice is etc.
If you are in Japan, you will need to use Japanese to gather the information for your local dojo. Japan has 1,209 dojos all over the country. Usually the beginners class is held once a year. If you are lucky, twice a year. There different dates for the course, application deadlines, numbers of people accepted, depending on the area. Everywhere is different.
Search out your dojo, and go and visit. If you are worried about you Japanese language ability bring a Japanese speaker. Remember to bring socks too, being barefoot at most dojos is not allowed.
Also if you are in high-school or university either enrolled or as an exchange student you can participate in kyudo club activities or bukatsu at your school. Visit the dojo if you have one and ask about joining.
It doesn't matter where you live, message me if you are stuck. If you are interested, go for it! I will do my best to help you on you.

Riding in armor on Kiso Uma. And: What's up with my sword?
I will be having another practice in armor on horseback this month and it reminds me I have gotten alot of comments about the blade on my sword being facing the wrong way.
I will do a post on this and on the difference between a tachi and katana soon, but in short, when you are in armor on horseback, this is correct.
For those who don't know, I've been learning washiki bajutsu (Japanese traditional equestrianism) for about a year and a half. The equipment, horses and techniques are all very different and amazingly interesting💡
We ride on Japanese indigenous horses called Kiso uma. The traditional horse tack is really made for their bodies. Kiso are well known for their hard working no nonsense attitude, their good memory and even temperament. And they snuggly and so sweet too💙
My armor isn't too heavy (about 20 plus kilos) but riding and using a yumi in armor on horseback was very different and interesting as you'd expect
About the Kiso Uma
Kiso uma is one of the eight indigenous horse breeds of Japan. It is the only native horse breed from Honshu. Like most other Japanese native breeds, it is critically endangered.
The breed originates from the Kiso Valley and Kiso Sanmyaku mountain range in Nagano, and Higashimino region, Gifu, Honshu.
During the Meiji era the breed was severely affected by breeding programmes of the Imperial Army, which wanted taller horses and ordered that Kiso stallions be gelded.
