Yabusame and washiki bajutsu practice the other day at Koyodai Horse Ranch in Yamanashi.
1. 弓の稽古。左腕に着けてるのが 射籠手です。
Target practice with a jindouya. The
protective sleeve I'm wearing is called an igote. Traditionally worn by yabusame/horseback archers.
2. 走路で和式馬術や騎射の稽古。やっと駈歩で立ち透かし😊Washiki Bajutsu practice I am still working on tachisukashi
3. 和種馬･木曽馬と過ごせる時間が平和です🐴Spending time with these beautiful Japanese horses is something I love.

Talking about zanshin
残身･残心の話
Translated directly as remaining spirit/ remaining form
📌Wiki says:
Zanshin is a state of awareness, of relaxed alertness. In several martial arts, zanshin refers more narrowly to the body's posture after a technique is executed.
📌一枚目は｢会｣という動作、引いてる状態で静かにからが延びあいながら離れが出ます。
The first photo is kai, at full draw. This dousa (movement) is active, I'm expanding milimeter by milimeter until release.

残身や残心がよく武道や古武道の世界で出てきます。武道によって少し意味合いが変わることもあります。
The word zanshin is oftentimes heard in budo and kobudo. Different budo have a different take on it sometimes.
基本動作:八節(はっせつ)の最後の方です。
In kyudo, zanshin is near the end of our 8 movements or hassetsu.
📌弓道や弓術の流派によって認める残身が変わります。弓の引き方や引く方向が変わると結果的に残身もかわります。
Depending on the school of archery, the zanshin that people will end up with will be different. Different schools or koryu will have different ways to shoot which changes the outcome=zanshin.
道場にある鏡を使って、自分の残身を確認すると射の弱点が見えてきます。
Checking our zanshin (usually there are mirrors right where we shoot) we can see where our technique needs improvement.
Some pointers are a straight bow, yugaeri (the bow rotates in our hand), the height of our bow hand isn't low or infront of us. Our tenouchi is intact. The examiners at our gradings check all of these things😄

無心の話
Talking about mushin
What is mushin?
Mu無 is empty/nothingness shin心 is heart. Mushin can be translated as clear mindedness, peace of mind, calm state of mind.
人ぞれぞれですが、私にとって弓道の一部が瞑想、集中、落ち着き。
Kyudo for me is parts of meditation, concentration, calmness but this varies person to person.
弓道始まったばっかりの頃、八節覚えるのに頭がいっぱいでした。
When I started learning kyudo, I spent weeks and months just learning technique and and trying to remember hassetsu (8 movements in kyudo).
最近考えせず、不安感じせず、少し｢無心｣に近づけた気がします。
稽古の最初の一手、審査での一手、純粋な心で弓引いてると思います。
最初の一手以降は研究が始まるので沢山考えて分析します(笑)
Recently though I have noticed that when I approach my practice and grading with no thoughts, or doubts and just feel the movements and glow with the flow, the results are very good.
これは無心ですか?
ずっとじゃないけど無心の時はあると思います。
審査の細かいところは覚えてません😅
Is this mushin? Sometimes I think so. If you ask me how my grading(shinsa) went, did I make any mistakes? I honestly can't answer with alot of details😅

この着物は本当に気に入りです。自分の中では着物着て弓を引く事が尊い?な存在です。特別です。
This kimono is one of my favourites. For me practicing kyudo in kimono is something quite sacred and special.
着物着て弓引く際、決まった動作いくつかあります。特に写真見てわかるものが｢襷裁き｣たすきさばき。
着物の袖は邪魔にならないよう、襷を使ってきれいに畳む動作。
There are specfic movements associated with the putting on and taking off of the white band (tasuki) that hold my kimono sleeves called tasuki sabaki.
男性の方は左の着物袖をからだから下ろし、袴に袖を差し込む。この動作は肌脱ぎといいます。
Men will take off the left kimono sleeve in a movement called hada nugi.
参段になると着物の着て弓引く事ができますので襷裁きまたは肌脱ぎを学びます。
Usually once we have reached 3rd dan, little by little we learn tasuki sabaki or hada nugi and its movements.

和式馬術の話
Talking about ｢washiki bajutsu｣ the way of the horse & traditional Japanese horse riding techniques🐴
来月で｢和式馬術｣始まって一年になる。
Next month will mark 1 year since I started on the different and very interesting path of learning washiki bajutsu.
Washiki = Japanese style bajutsu = horse riding techniques.
紅葉台木曽馬牧場で和種馬の木曽馬乗ります✨
I ride Japanese kiso breed horses which I think is important in keeping with the tradition and supporting the organisations trying to raise awareness for Japanese indigenous horse breeds.
和式馬術ではブリティッシュと千賀って、和鐙を踏んで馬から伝わる反撞を膝で吸収し、腰を鞍から浮かして乗ります。これを｢立透かし｣と言います。立ち透かしという技術はお稽古で時間かけてできるようになるものです。
The equipment (saddle, stirrups, bridal, bit etc are different to that of overseas horseriding).
The riding techniques such as tachisukashi take a long time to perfect and need constant repition to maintain.
そして、少しずつですが、自前の道具集めてます✨
Little by little I am getting my own equipment, which is really exciting😊
和式馬術の先生が有名な流鏑馬団体の元射手で、自分のペースでちゃんとした技術学べて感謝してます。
I am lucky that my teachers are retired yabusame horse back archers. This allows me to learn techniques and methods handed down for generations since feudal times.

I visited a wonderful art exhibition yesterday.
